Calculate tip amount and split the bill — free, instant, no signup required
A tip calculator is a simple tool that figures out how much to tip based on a bill amount and tip percentage, and optionally splits the total between multiple people. Doing this in your head after a meal is fine in theory, but tricky in practice — especially after a few drinks, with awkward percentages like 18%, or when splitting between five friends who each owe a different share. The FileTools Tip Calculator does the math instantly as you type, with one-tap percentage buttons for the most common amounts (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%), a custom percentage field, and an automatic per-person split. All calculations happen in your browser — nothing is sent to any server.
Common use cases: at restaurants when you want to add a precise tip without mental math; splitting a group dinner check evenly between friends; figuring out tips for delivery drivers, hairdressers, or taxis; calculating service tips at hotels and spas; budgeting an evening out before you go; double-checking the suggested tip on a payment terminal; calculating tips in a foreign currency where the exchange feels unfamiliar; and any time you want a quick, accurate split between multiple people.
Sit-down restaurants (US): 15% adequate · 18% good · 20%+ excellent

Hairdressers/barbers: 15–20%
Hotel housekeeping: $2–5 per night

Customs vary widely between countries — many European countries include service charges, while Japan and many parts of Asia consider tipping unusual or even rude.
10%: move the decimal one place left ($45.20 → $4.52)
20%: calculate 10% then double it ($45.20 → $4.52 × 2 = $9.04)
15%: calculate 10%, then add half of that ($45.20 → $4.52 + $2.26 = $6.78)
18%: calculate 20% then subtract 10% of itself ($45.20 → $9.04 − $0.90 ≈ $8.14)
25%: divide the bill by 4 ($45.20 ÷ 4 = $11.30)

To calculate a tip, multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage and divide by 100. For example, a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $50 × 20 ÷ 100 = $10. The FileTools Tip Calculator does this automatically as you type — just enter the bill, choose a percentage, and see the tip amount, total, and per-person split instantly.
In the United States, 15-20% is standard at sit-down restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, 20% or more for excellent service. Higher percentages (20-25%) are common for fine dining or larger parties. Many other countries don't tip at all (Japan, China) or include service charges automatically (most of Europe).
Etiquette experts traditionally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since the tax isn't part of the service. However, many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference is usually small. This calculator works with whichever amount you enter — pre-tax or post-tax — so use whichever number you prefer.
Enter the number of people sharing the bill, and the calculator divides the total (bill + tip) equally between them. It also shows the tip portion per person separately. This works well for evenly split meals; for separate checks where each person pays their own dishes, calculate the tip on each individual subtotal.
Tipping customs vary: 10-15% for takeout (US), 15-20% for delivery drivers, 15-20% for hairdressers and barbers, 15-20% for taxi/rideshare drivers, $1-2 per drink for bartenders, $2-5 for valet parking, $1-2 per bag for hotel porters. Local norms vary widely — when in doubt, ask a local or check current etiquette guides for your area.
